Night Auditors:

The Vampires

You all know of them, but most people don't actually know them. The Auditors are the ones that work the midnight shifts and flip the hotel. They know a bit about everybody's job, because they're the ones that have to fix any and every mistake that they come across. They double, triple and quadruple-check your work. Some of you may not even know who they are; they are like a shadow in the night, blending in. The only time they appear is when there are problems.

So, in reality, who are these people that prefer to work midnights and sleep when most of the world is up and about? They are you and me; men and women; older and younger. They are people that focus better in the middle of the night than during the daytime.Want to know what a Night Auditor does? Then come along on a journey with me!

Start of shift: The Night Auditor comes in yawning, getting ready to pull an all-nighter. Some of them have just woken up; some of them will go to sleep as soon as they get off. They may have a coffee, banana, pop, or anything else with them that is bound to keep them awake. Some of them go for a bit of a different method; there are people who pop ginseng pills, bring in a Playstation and play DDR when the night is quiet, or more.

The float is counted, notes are passed, and then third shift prepares for a long, quieter (relatively!) night than during the day. Paperwork is checked, receipts, deposits and payments are processed, and the Auditor slowly, methodically checks each person’s work from during the day. Once they are satisfied that all is well, they close out the day and open a new one. At that point, they generally have the rest of their shift to do as they please, as well as handing breakfast duties, checkouts, calling cabs, etc.

When the sun comes up and 1st shift comes in, they compare notes, and then the Auditor leaves. 1st shift has no idea what they’re going to do now; they think “wow, how can someone stay up all night and WORK that shift?!”. As first shift is thinking this, the Auditor is out and about, ready to face the day… or sleep, whichever they prefer.Hotel Night Auditors.

Love them or hate them, but remember, they make sure you can come in and do your job each day!
